How to make

  1. Start by melting a knob of butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add your chopped onion and celery to the pan and cook until soft and translucent.
  2. Next, stir in the cloves and cooked ham or shredded ham hock. Cook all together for a couple of minutes to release the mouth-watering flavours.
  3. Then add the stock, followed by the frozen peas. Allow the stock to come to a boil and give everything a good stir.
  4. Let the soup gently simmer and bubble away for 10–15 minutes until the peas and ham hock are soft and infused with lots of flavour.
  5. Once cooked, remove from the heat and blend everything using a handheld blender. For a chunkier soup, pulse a few times rather than blending until smooth. If you prefer some texture, set aside a portion of the ham before blending and use it to garnish the soup before serving.
  6. Finally, add salt and pepper to taste, then ladle into bowls. For a touch of indulgence, swirl in a splash of cream before serving with warm, crusty bread for the ultimate finishing touch.
