Four Ways to Spend Your Black Friday More Sustainably

It’s no secret that Black Friday for all its excitement takes a heavy toll on the planet. But it doesn’t have to be that way. At Milk & More we’re launching Refill Friday to combat packaging waste whilst still bagging a deal, and there are plenty of other things that you can do to make your Black Friday a little more green. Here are a few tips and ideas for shopping more sustainably.

1. Check the packaging, or pack it in all together

Opting for low- and no-packaging products is a great way to reduce waste. Refill products are a perfect solution to ensure you keep topped up on your favourite goodies without the packaging pile up. But we get it, not everything can be sold ‘naked’ or refilled. So that’s where checking the packaging comes in, aside from choosing products with minimal packaging, looking at the materials is also an easy way to be more eco-conscious. Recyclable, compostable and biodegradable packaging is always better than non-recyclable plastic!

2. Love local

Shopping locally where you can, not only supports small businesses, but can save on environmental impact, too. Reducing the distance products have to be shipped both before they are sold, and after too, can reduce emissions and make your purchase that bit more eco-conscious.

3. Choose brands championing sustainability

There are an increasing number of fantastic brands who are taking steps towards sustainability in a number of innovative ways. From reducing packaging, to rethinking ingredients and materials, and prioritising people and planet over profits. Looking out for certification labels such as B-Corp, Leaping Bunny, Fairtrade, Soil Association and more when you’re choosing products can help you make kinder purchases. We’re proud to say that many of the brands we partner with have eco-focussed accreditations!

4. Ditch the deals and spend it differently

Everyone loves a bargain and Black Friday is a great opportunity to grab one, so do! But, limiting the number of deals you splash your cash on can help to reduce the amount of both money and products wasted from overconsumption. Enjoy spending a little less time shopping and a little more time with loved ones instead! Whether you play a board game, or cosy up with a film or binge-worthy TV series, take an autumnal walk, fill your home with the scent of an autumnal bake (and enjoy tucking into it too!), take time to let your wallet, the planet and yourself breath amongst the deal diving!
