Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's Guide to Better Gut Health

We chatted with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, who, with the team at River Cottage, has created a brilliant range of gut-friendly products, to find out why and how we need to look after our gut health.

We’ve been hearing a lot about gut health recently. What’s made it so important?

Our gut health is hugely important because of how much it contributes to the functioning of basically our entire bodies. Everything, from our immune systems to our brains, functions better when our gut microbiome is healthy and diverse. So, it really is worthwhile for our overall wellbeing to pay some attention to our gut health.

So, how exactly can we look after our guts?

Well, our gut biomes are made of a unique diversity of trillions of highly specialist microbes that are influenced by the foods we eat. The general rule is; the more diversity in your microbiome, the better. A wide diversity of plant foods is a great help in achieving that, and getting more live cultures into your diet also gives a brilliant boost. And that’s what led us to create our River Cottage organic kefirs

Can you tell us more about the River Cottage kefir and what makes it special?

Each of our creamy and subtly tangy ‘traditional style’ kefirs are made using 28 different live cultures — which we believe is more than any other kefir on the market — so as well as tasting fab, it’s top stuff brimming with good gut-loving bacteria. We’re thrilled to be offering them through Milk & More, alongside our long-standing favourite organic yoghurts and refreshing live kombuchas. Together they form a terrific trio of gut-friendly products.
